Protect Yourself from Fraud: Tips & Warning Signs

The holiday season brings the blessings of gift-giving, good cheer and time with family and friends. Unfortunately, it also brings an increase in fraud with fraud attempts jumping nearly 14% for the period during and immediately after the holiday season. Not surprisingly, these scams often center on shopping, especially online with sixty percent of consumers taking to the internet to buy gifts. While we have safeguards in place, you are the first line of defense when it comes to deterring fraud. 

Typical warnings signs for online fraud include:
•    Spelling errors or shoddy grammar on the website or in an email.
•    No phone number or street address listed for the business. 
•    Website does not have a secure connection (https://)
•    An unsolicited email asks you to click on a link or download an app to access a deal.

While fraud tends to peak during the holidays it’s important to be vigilant all year round. Here are five tips for spotting & thwarting fraud:

1.    Monitor your accounts. Although financial institutions use complex algorithms to monitor your accounts for odd behavior, you are the best detective when it comes to spotting unusual transactions or changes to your accounts. Checking your statements and credit score on a regular basis is a great way to be proactive. The earlier you can catch an issue the better.

2.    Be wary. Only open emails, attachments and links from people you know. If you’re uncertain about a link, hover over it with your mouse to see where it leads.

3.    Follow up. If you are unsure whether an email request is legitimate, try to verify it by contacting the company or individual directly. 

4.    Make sure your connection is secure. Avoid making purchases on public Wi-Fi. 

5.    Trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right about a call or transaction follow up on your concerns. Call the business about a transaction in question or reach out to us or the credit bureau if something doesn’t look right.

6.    Bonus Tip: Use the Mobi Money app to manage your debit card right from your phone. Receive a notification any time your card is used, set spending limits and even turn off your debit card with the touch of a button.

Our Team is Growing

We are pleased to announce the addition of three new employees to our PCB team; Jenny Bailey, Katie Peterson, & Sami Rogers. 

Jeannette, (Jenny) Bailey
Jenny joins us after many years at American Girl in Middleton. She is a Customer Service Representative at our Spring Green office. She has a degree in economics and a strong background in banking. 

Kathryn, (Katie) Peterson
Katie is a Customer Service Representative at our Mazomanie office. She grew up in Mazomanie and currently lives there with her two sisters. You may recognize Katie from her time working in town at The Old Feed Mill or Carr Valley Cheese.

Samantha, (Sami) Rogers
Sami is working in both our Arena and Barneveld offices as a Customer Service Representative. She grew up in the Spring Green area and graduated from River Valley High School.  She has an Associate Degree in Human Resource Management and is currently taking online classes at Madison College for Business Management.

2018 Holiday Food Drive Results

Each year we are amazed at the level of generosity displayed by our communities during our annual holiday food drive. This year we were able to deliver checks totaling in excess of $5,232 to our local food pantries. Those funds are used to keep pantries fully stocked during the busy holiday season so that they can support local families in need. That’s what community is all about. Thank you for your part in helping make a difference in the community this holiday season!

Mazomanie Area Flood Assistance Fund: Recap

Late last August the world was turned upside down for so many who were affected by the flooding that took place along the Black Earth Creek. Many of the homes and businesses that were damaged in the flood were not in a defined floodplain. Without flood insurance the majority of these home and business owners were left with nothing to fall back on but their own personal savings to cover the huge financial burden of recovery. The Mazomanie Area Flood Assistance Fund was established with the goal to ease that burden for our affected friends and neighbors. Due to the generosity of so many, the fund was able to distribute $212,000 to 100 recipients in the area. 

Online Account Password Updates

Starting on April 1, 2019 you may notice a small change to your online and mobile banking experience as we implement bi-annual password changes for all online banking accounts. While our goal is to create a seamless and simple banking experience for our customers, we believe it to be critical that we take every measure necessary to ensure that your accounts and information remain secure.
